QUARANTINE LIVE – THE FILM
A film by Giuseppe Aquino
SYNOPSIS
It’s Spring 2020. The world is in the grip of the Coronavirus pandemic. Italy has been badly hit and on 8 March the Government declares the country in a state of total lockdown.
People can leave their homes only if strictly necessary and with a written declaration. Travelling between regions is a criminal offence. Everyone is affected; there are no exemptions. As never before in contemporary times, there are no distinctions between wealth, poverty or social standing: everyone must stay inside and make do with whatever they have. Immediately, there is a sense of fear and isolation. Whether with family or friends, with colleagues or in isolation, people are surrounded by uncertainty. The news from the media is more and more tragic every day. A simple shopping trip becomes an almost heroic gesture.
The film tells the story of this momentous time through the stories of many different people. Face-to-face with this dramatic situation, amongst fear and a sense of fragility, people carry on with their daily lives. Their stories are different, but united by the common thread of the quarantine. From the lawyer to the doctor, from the newlyweds to the nurse, from the student to the workman, everyone faces this highly uncertain time. But amongst all the difficulties of social distancing, through the hours spent on the phone, in the hospital, as the family or in isolation, there shines forth something beautiful: solidarity, faith and, above all, hope.
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
When three years ago I started working on a film about the life of St. Peter Chanel, a missionary saint who travelled all over the world, it was impossible for myself and the production crew to reach some of the remote islands of the Pacific. As a result, I began to devise a plan to shoot many scenes of the film remotely using innovative systems supported by wifi and on-site collaborators. I had never imagined that I would have to make use of this strategy in my home country, due to a Government decision which, rightly, forced me to stay indoors. The arrival of the lockdown in Italy meant that I had to quickly put into practice the theories I had developed, writing the screenplay in three days and shooting the first sets the following week.
I strongly desired to capture in full this unique and historical moment, and to do so at the very time it was all taking place. I wanted to create a film that would not only be a cultural work but an anthropological document for the future. We all saw images on the television of deserted cities without the presence, rhythm or vibrancy of human life. Through the film I wanted to place the human person back at the very centre.
I wanted to bear witness to the beautiful story of solidarity and faith that, in the midst of tragic times, had blossomed. I wanted to demonstrate the extraordinary commitment of medical teams, showing how they personally suffered the consequences of the virus. But most of all, I wanted to give a message of hope. The pandemic may have divided us, but in this state of division, we rediscovered unity.
CONTEXTUAL NOTES
The uniqueness of this film was declared and recorded by a notarial act registered in Rome on 5 May 2020 by Federico Magliulo. For the first time in the history of cinema, not only were the scenes directed remotely for the duration of the film, but the work of the entire film crew was conducted remotely. The management of the sets was carried out through videoconferences, phone calls, wifi systems and a series of other innovative technical methods. The manual set-up was organised by the main actors and their families. The scenes themselves were filmed with the technological means that the actors had at their disposal, including mobile phones and semi-professional or professional cameras. The director was present on all sets remotely, for the duration of each shoot, carrying out his work as if he were there in person.
In addition to the above, this is the only non-documentary film on the subject of the Coronavirus lockdown, shot entirely during the period of the quarantine.
At this current date of 24 June 2020, the film is in the Selection phase for the 77th Venice International Film Festival organised by La Biennale di Venezia.
NOTES ON THE CAST
Prof. Giuseppe De Donno
The director wanted to pay homage to the doctors who have been at the centre of this drama, performing acts of heroism, sometimes even to the extent of sacrificing their own lives to save others. For this reason, the presence of a doctor in the film was very important. Amongst the many who would have been willing to demonstrate their profession through the film, the Director chose Professor Giuseppe De Donno. The Director and Production Crew took this decision based on De Donno’s excellent reputation as a loyal, committed man of strong faith, with a particularly high recovery rate for those affected by the virus under his care. The Director is honoured to have Professor De Donno in the film, and the film crew is honoured to have been able to work with him.
